質問(しつもん) means a question, inquiry, or the act of asking for clarification.
It sounds a bit more organized than a casual “ask.” Use it when you want a clear answer, explanation, or more detail. It is common in classrooms, meetings, interviews, and business settings.
Use 質問する(しつもんする) for “to ask a question.” Useful phrases include 質問があります(しつもんがあります), “I have a question,” and the more casual 質問がある(しつもんがある).
Do not confuse 質問 with 聞く(きく). 聞く can mean “to ask” in everyday situations, such as asking someone’s name or asking for directions. 質問 feels more like presenting a specific question that needs an answer or explanation.
