答え（こたえ） means the content of an answer, not just the act of responding.
Use it for the information someone gives in response to a question. It comes from 答える（こたえる）, meaning to answer.
Compare 返事（へんじ）: 返事 is a reply or acknowledgment, like responding during roll call. 答え is the actual information that answers the question.
