Used specifically for putting clothing, footwear, or accessories onto the legs and feet.

履く（はく） means to put on or wear items on the lower body, especially the legs and feet.

Use it for shoes, socks, pants, skirts, and similar items: 靴を履く（くつをはく）, 靴下を履く（くつしたをはく）, ズボンを履く（ズボンをはく）.

Japanese has different “wear” verbs depending on the body part:

・履く（はく）: lower body, such as 靴（くつ）, 靴下（くつした）, ズボン, スカート ・着る（きる）: upper body or full-body clothing, such as shirts, coats, dresses ・かぶる: headwear, such as hats ・する: accessories, such as watches, necklaces, ties

Important: footwear always uses 履く（はく）, not 着る（きる）. Say 靴を履く（くつをはく）, not 靴を着る（くつをきる）.

For “is wearing,” use 履いている（はいている）.
