The focus is the physical move and start of duties at the new location. As a する-verb, 赴任する（ふにんする） means “to go to one’s new post.”

Do not confuse it with 転勤（てんきん）. 転勤 is the job transfer itself, often the company’s decision or order. 赴任 is going there to begin the assignment.

Also, 赴任 is not for changing companies. For changing jobs or employers, use 転職（てんしょく）.

Common phrases include 海外赴任（かいがいふにん） for an overseas assignment and 単身赴任（たんしんふにん） for moving alone for work while one’s family stays behind.
